Sinking of the USS Turner
The next morning, the USS Turner experienced several internal explosions that mostly occurred in the ammunition stowage areas. The explosion was so violent that men and guns were hurled into the sea. The coast guard rescued 152 enlisted men and two officers but some were not lucky enough to survive. Bobbie Waldrup went down with the ship along with 15 officers and 122 other men. The ship had only been in commision for less than 8 months.
Bobbie was buried at sea and his body could not be recovered. His rank at his time of death was second class seaman. He served for a total of 6 months and 3 days.
